Carbs are both good and bad for you. No carb diets, like the Atkins Diet, are generally very unhealthy. Carbohydrates are necessary for energy for daily activity as well as extraneous activity. Like most things, carbs are best in moderation. The idea behind no carb diets is that your body will begin to metabolize fats because there are no carbs or sugars to metabolize for energy. This does work in burning fat, however carbs are essential for proper brain, muscle and nerve function. Too much carbohydrate intake can result in sequestration of fat however.
The best diet is almost always the most balanced one. In that, carbs are good for you as long as they are not consumed in excess, and they are not the only nutrients eaten. When someone has an imbalanced diet, the natural reaction is to eliminate something else. Everything in moderation is the easiest and best way to maintain a healthy diet. Carbs, like protein and fats are fine when balanced, and unhealthy, like most things, in excess.
Carbs are perfectly fine for you. However, like any other food group, don’t overdo it. Carbs have been getting a bad rap lately because they take longer to burn off in your body. That doesn’t make it a bad thing, though — carbs are the best thing to have to get a boost of energy.
