Electric motors are different that gasoline powered motors, which are also called engines. Electric motors turn using force generated by alternating magnetic fields in the motor, which causes a shaft to turn. Gasoline powered engines rely on small explosions in cylinders called the combustion chambers to force a piston to move up and down. This motion is then transferred to the wheels of the car. There are different variations of electric motors that all work differently, and there are different types of gasoline powered engines too. But, the basic mechanical principles across the different types of electric motors and gasoline engines, respectively, are the same.
