Are calories energy for the human body?

Not necessarily.  Calories are rather a measurement of the energy potential in food.  Energy is stored in molecular bonds and calories are a means of quantifying that energy which is especially useful in nutritional information.

jon_dy_albay is correct.  Calories measure the amount of potential energy in relation to food, but to elaborate, calories are exhibited in everything that contains energy – including non-edible fuel sources like gasoline.  See the link for more information.
