Are buses or subways more efficient in cities?

Typically most forms of public transportation are more efficient in highly populated areas. Buses and subways are generally public funded, so the more people there are to fund these systems through taxes and rider fees, the more efficiently they will run. The higher the population is, and the more densely the population lives, the more people can benefit from living close to transit, and being able to ride buses and subways to work or other daily destinations.
