Are buildings the largest producer of pollution?

Buildings are a huge source of pollution and also resource consumption. In the U.S. alone, buildings account for 39% of our total energy use (which comes largely from coal burning plants), 12% of our water consumption, 68% of our electricity consumption, and a whopping 38% of our carbon dioxide emissions. This definitely makes buildings a target for “greening” programs, and luckily the US EPA and many private contractors and consultants are collaborating on ways to build more sustainable buildings.

It depends on where you are. In Boston, for example, buildings are the largest source of pollution, but it is different from city to city.
