Are breeding cycles controlled by the sun or the moon?

Although there has been some speculation among biologists that moon-cycles may affect the breeding dates of certain animals (particularly white tailed deer), the most widely-accepted theory is that the breeding cycles of most animals are influenced by the photo-period, that is, the legnth of time which the animal is exposed to the sun.  Photoperiodism (as this phenomenon is called) means that animals have evolved to breed at the time of year most favorable to the survival of offspring–usually the spring.
