Are bonfires bad for the environment?

They’re not bad in the sense that bonfires are carbon neutral. In other words, burning wood releases the same amount of carbon as leaving the wood to decay on its own. What might damage the environment is burning stuff other than wood in your bonfire, such as rubber or plastic. That would give off fumes that may harm your health along with the environment.
