Are bison an endangered species?

Historically, as many as sixty million bison/buffalo roamed the grasslands of North America. These numbers have drastically decreased. They were once considered endangered, but captive breeding programs have increased the number of bison alive so that their status is now considered “Near Threatened,” instead of endangered or threatened. So no, currently they are not endangered, but we are lucky to have been able to bring the numbers back. Other North American species, like the once-ubiquitous and now extinct passenger pigeon, were not so lucky.
