Currently there are about 4000 bengal tigers split evenly between captivity and the wild, mainly India. Poaching is the biggest problem facing tigers as their bones and organ are an important component of Eastern medicine. Through efforts by the Indian government in enforcing jail time and steep fines the Bengla tiger has maintained the largest population of any tiger sub-species.
Bengal Tigers are listed as “Endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Redlist. Their numbers are decrreasing due to habitat loss and poaching. The World Wildlife Fund has made a plan to double the entire tiger population by 2022. They will protect the tigers’ habitat in order to save the species. With efforts like this and others, tiger recovery is possible.
