No, the batteries for a hybrid are not the same as plug-in hybrids. Technologies are being developed to make plug-in hybrid more accessible but as it stands, conversion kits need to be bought for current Prius’ and other hybrids. In 2010, Toyota will be offering a Prius plug-in hybrid as well as GM in the coming years and a number of other automakers. Conversion is costly and can add a couple hundred pounds of weight to the car but it tends to add over 20 MPGs to a Prius and for people driving a relatively short distance to work, there is an opportunity to save a ton of money.
