Balloons can be bad for the environment. Each year, millions of balloons are released into the air, and while the latex balloon material are biodegradable, the plastic ribbons/strings attached to them are not. When balloons finally land somewhere, they can cause serious damage and pollution. They can wind up in trees, river systems, and many other habitats. Latex balloon material has shown up in the digestive systems and many types of turtles, dolphins, and many other marine mammals. The plastic ribbons can also cause entangelment. (Organized) balloon releases are drawing more criticism from environmental groups in both the US and UK.
