Interesting question. Though I have not been able to find any studies that have focused on such an area, I do think the answer is yes. The reason is because the alternative to having an automated system would be to have people answer phones for help lines. This would mean that a facility would need to be constructed to have people work in, they would have to drive their cars to work, the would produce waste from food, paperwork, etc., and the building would use up a lot of energy to stay running. When we compare all of this to the electricity needed to power a few computers that run the automated help center, I think it is clear that the automated system is better for the environment.
