Many U.S cities are making efforts to reduce car usage by improving public transportation and by making the city more biker-friendly. The government is also proposing new mass transit ideas, including light-rail ideas similar to the trains in Europe.

In addition to mass-transit and bike-friendliness, Zip cars are a huge boon to cities in reducing the amount of car travel. It reduces the overall number of cars both on the road and parked, and lets people have access to a car only when it is really necessary.
