One US nuclear plant that could be decommissioned in the next few years is the Vermont Yankee plant, owned by Entergy in Vermont. In 2012, the Vermont state legislature will review whether or not to renew the permits for Vermont Yankee, and the state decides to withhold renewal then the plant will be closed down. In anticipation of this upcoming decision, Greenpeace launched a campaign earlier this year designed to eliminate the Vermont Yankee plant. Greenpeace has argued that Vermont can replace the nuclear plant with renewable energy source like solar energy, and that the majority of Vermont citizens want to see Vermont Yankee closed down in 2012.
