Are any cities building eco friendly homeless shelters?

Yes. More and more local governments and nonprofits are building eco-friendly homeless shelters or retrofitting old ones. Green homeless shelters have been built in California, Texas, Illinois, Virginia, and several other places.

One green shelter, Chicago’s Garden Mission, has a green roof, water-saving toilets, one hundred solar panels, and a greenhouse where residents can grow food. Crossroads, a shelter in Oakland, California, has solar panels,non-toxic paint, and furniture made from pressed wheat. Supporters say that along with helping the earth, the shelters provide a healthy environment for homeless people who have asthma, HIV, or other health problems.
