There are four species of anteaters, all of them found in Central and South America. They are dependent on a tropical habitat, and are not found as far north as the United States. The largest species, the giant anteaters, can be found in open savanna habitat in South America as well as in rain forests, and spend most of their time on the ground. The smaller anteaters, however, are confined mainly to mature tropical forests, and are skilled tree-climbers.
