For the most part, zoos and aquariums receive their animals from captive breeding programs in other zoos and aquariums. Animals can also come from captured or abandoned exotic pets or from rehab programs. Sometimes they take animals from the wild as a part of a captive breeding and reintroduction program if the animal is critically endangered. The idea is that if the animal is about to go extinct, zoos and aquariums can sometimes capture and breed these animals in safe conditions, managing the genetic diversity within the species. Just a couple successful examples of this are California Condors and Red Wolves.
