According to an analysis in 2008, per capita road miles peaked in 2004, and declined in 2007. The last time there was a noted decrease in driving was 1980.
It all depends on what time frame you use. Cars did not gain popularity until the early 1900s and the car industry and culture as we know it now didn’t initiate until after WWII. So if you look at these longer term trends, Americans are driving much more than they used to.
