Biodiesel, for example, is more expensive to produce than petroleum gasoline. Firstly, the amount of raw materials for biodiesel production (mainly canola or soybean oils in the US) has restricted availability, because of the food vs. fuel debate. More responsible for the cost of biodiesel production, though, is the method. To produce biodiesel, most companies use a technique that requires high temperatures and pressures, both of which are cost and energy intensive.
