Neither almond or walnut orchards are very detrimental to the environment. Both nuts are grown and harvested in similar manners, requiring an orchard and well drained soil. Both farming methods typically involve some pesticide use. For example, in the US, the USDA required domestic almonds to be fumigated but not imported ones. This can lead to pollution in the form of ground water and run-off. However, both industries are making strides to reduce their environmental impact, so it is hard to say whether one is worse than the other.
