Most cars today are front-wheel drive. Rear-wheel driven cars are pretty rare nowadays. While an AWD car will be better at getting you out of sticky situations, they may not be the most efficient. In terms of handling and control in poor conditions, you will be able to drive more efficiently with an all-wheel drive car. But all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive cars require componentry that can add extra weight to the vehicle, thereby using slightly more gas and making the cars somewhat less efficient.
