Not all plastics are safe to put in the dishwasher. We all know that plastics exposed to high temperatures can be dangerous. What we don’t realize is that when we put them in the dishwasher, they are also doused with hot water. “Repeated exposure to high temperatures and harsh cleaning agents can deteriorate plastic and leach the chemicals that compose them — which may include BPA, phthalates, DEHA (Di(2-ethylhexyl)adipate), styrene, formaldehyde, acetyltributylcitrate, and diocytlapidate.” Plastics such as acrylic and styrene are not recommended for dishwasher use. While some may be labeled “top rack dishwasher-safe,” repeated washes can cause the plastics to deteriorate and leach harmful chemicals.
