All hybrids have always been plug-ins, since the first Toyota Prius was developed, manufactured, and released to the public in 1997 in Japan. The newest wave of cars are electrics which are completely plug-in and do not use gasoline at all. The hybrid uses both the electric battery and fuel to manage the wide range of maneuvers typically used by cars thus making the plug-in necessary.
