Are all freshwater ecosystems similar?

No, freshwater systems can vary greatly.  The habitats found within lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, springs and wetlands can be very, very different.  Factors such as light penetration, temperature, vegetation and stillness (effecting oxygen levels) of the water all determine what the ecosystem will be like.
