You can pretty much safely assume if you’re buying at a farmers’ market it’s more eco-friendly. Food at farmers’ markets come from local farmers, so they don’t go through the whole shipping process that foods going to the supermarket have. They also aren’t commercial agriculture, so less toxic materials were used to grow the crops.
I don’t think it’s so black and white, although in a generality yes they are better. Who knows what practice the farmer is using, and it’s entirely dependent on that. Let’s say they are selling goods locally, but have environment-hindering practice like growing invasive crops? It could happen. Unlikely, but i would not say farmers markets are guaranteed environmentally sound.
