Civilization has always been reliant upon the oceans for survival. These large bodies of water, accounting for 72% of the earth’s surface, play a huge role in climate, weather, and air quality regulation by interacting with the atmosphere in complex ways we cannot fully understand yet. In addition, people use the oceans for travel, shipping, adventure, food and recreation. There are many ways in which life depends on the oceans (seas), even in areas far from them.
