First of all, there are different types of landfills which require different building criteria. So the answer is that not all landfills are built exactly the same although most have similar structures. It must not be close enough to the groundwater reservoir so as to prevent contaminations. The landfill must have protective impermeable layers to also ensure no groundwater contamination. There should me materials, such as sand to remove/attract chemicals and liquids out of the waste. The primary goal is to keep sanitary conditions, which may seem oxymoronic in a landfill.
