Most green volunteer opportunities (at least in Seattle) seem to be actually getting your hands dirty and either planting trees or removing non-native plants.There might be others where you live depending on the demographics and types of businesses.
There are many ways of finding out about these opportunities:
http://www.volunteermatch.org/ – My favorite, I’ve found several volunteering jobs with this site.
http://californiavolunteers.org/index.php – This one seems pretty well used as well.
You could call the Sierra Club Chapter nearest you to ask if they have anything. http://www.sierraclub.org/chapters/
