It’s all of the above. Migrations are usually seasonal: going south in the winter where it’s warmer, or going to a safer place to raise young. A succession happens after a habitat is disturbed, say with a forest fire, and then re-growth is very slow. The first to grow in previously wiped out area are very different from what was there pre-disturbance.
