Animal migration is when a species moves from one location to another in a seasonal pattern. For example: birds flying south for the winter. Succession refers to a complete shift in a specific ecosystem from one group to another. This could be due to something like a forest fire. Pioneer plants, plants that take the opportunity to grow in an otherwise vacant habitat, will begin to grow in this type of situation, as the other species that were there would have been killed off.

Animals are also part of succession. The animals encountered in a newly-opened ecosystem are different than the ones that exist in a climax community, for example.
