Amsterdam has many green aspects and characteristics. The Dutch emit half the greenhouse gases per capita than the U.S., their electricity used to power trams and light buildings comes from burning municipal waste, and they travel by bike more than by car. Also, Amsterdam has plans for the city’s municipality to be climate neutral by 2015, and that the city itself will be reducing its CO2 footprint by 40 percent in 2025.
Amsterdam could be considered green because it is so bike-friendly compared to cars. Parking is very expensive and streets are difficult to drive on, so the bicycles are the most common mode of transportation in the city and the biking infrastructure is very strong. The city’s public transit fleet is 100% low-emission. Amsterdam is considered to be the European city with the greenest transportation system.
