    Most topping means the removal of 50-100% of a tree’s crown. It can be very hazardous for a tree’s health and end up costing you more (in time and money) in the end. There are alternatives to topping, information about which is available at the link below. recommends the following:

    “If practical, branches should be removed back to their point of origin. If a branch must be shortened, it should be cut back to a lateral that is large enough to assume the terminal role.”

    In general, it is important to leave as many leaves as possible so that the tree can continue to feed itself.
