Is algae the most versatile biofuel?

The benefits of algae as a biofuel source are not so much tied to its versatility as it is to the fact that it is fast growing, has a very high oil content, and does not require cropland to grow. This is one of the few biofuel sources that doesn’t compete with food crops for land, a major problem with soy-based biodiesel and corn ethanol.
