No, algae is not the most efficient of all of the bio-fuels that currently exist. The most efficient bio-fuel is actually biomethane. In the United Kingdom, a conference was held by the National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC) in 2007, where it was declared that biomethane is the most efficient bio-fuel. Biomethane is five times more efficient than biodiesel.

Algae is definitely one of the most efficient sources of bio-fuels. Algae can yield over 30 times more energy per acre than other crops when converted into biofuel. However, algae is more expensive per pound, and as of 2008 remains too expensive to serve as a source of economically competitive biofuels.
