From a purely carbon emissions perspective, probably the most useful and easy to use environmental metric, India does. In 2006 India emitted 1293 million metric tons of CO2. Africa emitted 1056 million metric tons. India is more developed than most of Africa, and is poised to industrialize even more. Though both countries emit a relatively low proportion of the world’s greenhouse gases, combating global warming will need to be a whole world effort. Africa and India’s cooperation in any international carbon treaties will be crucial for a sustainable future.
