Yes. African elephants are protected by laws against poaching and against trading ivory. However, poaching persists regardless of the laws, and government weakness and corruption has made it more difficult to provide elephants with adequate protection. Another difficulty Africa faces in its efforts to protect elephants is that as human population expand, elephants are more frequenly seen as a menace by local populations. Thus, conservation efforts frequently lack public support.
