TIMES reported that Linfen, China is the most polluted city in the world. It’s right in the heart of China’s coal belt and so the hills around the city are filled with mines and coal is constantly burning. The World Bank says that 16 of the 20 most polluted cities on earth are in China, and Linfen is the worst of the 16.
The World Health Organization (WHO) ranked Lanzhou, Gansu (in China) the world’s most air polluted city in 2011. The report focused on particulate matter (PM10s), which are microscopic liquid and solid materials of less than 10 micrometers. The city reportedly had 150 micrograms per cubic meter of PM10s, which is far more than Haikou, Hainan – the cleanest city in China – who has 38 micrograms per cubic meter of PM10s.
