The London Company was a joint stock company and the purpose of the original charter was to establish a settlement which would provide a profit for the investment owners. They hoped to find gold, but did not and had to find other ways to make the owners money. There were attempts to produce glass, pitch, tar but these were not very profitable.
The main purpose (as it usually is with expanding) was to get rich. I imagine that the human urge to discover and conquer new lands also had something to do with it. As valkyrie says previously, they were after gold and other ways to make money.
