According to the Weather Channel, Summer 2011 was the hottest summer on record for many cities in the middle of the United States. It seems that records like this are based on region, which makes sense considering the differences in temperature across the country.
On a global scale the 2011 year was one of the warmest ever recorded. “The year 2011 tied with 1997 as the 11th warmest year since records began in 1880”. The annual temperature for land and oceanic areas averaged around 0.51° Celsius or 0.92° Fahrenheit above the average for the 20th century. The average for the 20th century is 13.9° C and 57.0° F respectively. So not only was it a warmer year for U.S. standards, but also worldwide temperatures were high.
