I would say animal poaching is much worse because you are attributing to the demise of a living, breathing species.  While it is highly unethical to poach charcoal, it is not the same as killing an animal for the sake of your own benefit.  There is no need for a breed of animal to go extinct, but we will most likely run out of coal whether it is poached or not.
