These are 10 countries that produce the most trash:

1. The United States

As of 2006, the United States produced around 236 million tons of waste annually. In 2007, the United States produced 254 million tons of garbage. Alarmingly, the average American throws away nearly 7 pounds of trash on a daily basis, according to PlanetThoughts. The U.S. consumes 30 percent of the world's resources despite making up only 5 percent of the world's population. It also produces 30 percent of the world's waste. In only a year, Americans throw away around 26,800,000 tons of food, 8,550,000 tons of furniture and furnishings, 6,330,000 tons of clothing and footwear, and tons of other waste. Food, furniture and furnishings, and clothing and footwear are discarded the most. Unfortunately, 80 percent of all products that are produced in the United States are used only once and then discarded, and 95 percent of plastic and 50 percent of all of the aluminum beverage cans that are thrown away never get recycled.

2. Russia

Russia, which is not too far behind the United States, produces over 200 million tons of garbage every year. As of 2000, the amount of waste produced annually by Russia was estimated to be around 207.4 tons. The number has likely increased significantly between 2000 and now due to a growing middle class and capitalist society.

3. Japan

Japan produces around 52.36 million tons of trash every year. Despite being number 3 on the list, recycling rates in Japan are high. In 2006, the recycling rate was 95 percent for steel cans, 90 percent for glass bottles, 89 percent for aluminum, 60 percent for paper, and 38 percent for paper containers for liquid.

4. Germany

Germany produces approximately 48.84 tons of garbage each year. But each German citizen produces about 1/3 of the amount of garbage that the average U.S. citizen does.

5. The United Kingdom

In the U.K., the amount of trash produced is even less than in Germany. Like Germans, the average British citizen produces less than 1/3 of the amount of trash produced by the average American. The United Kingdom's 60 million people produce around 34.85 million tons of trash every year.

6. Mexico

Mexico has an annual waste production of around 32.17 million tons. A likely reason why Mexico's annual waste production is not higher is because Mexico's economy does not allow for as much consumption as wealthier countries.

7. France

Like Mexico, France also produced an estimated amount of 32.17 million tons of trash. As a whole, France views recycling as important.

8. Italy

Italy produces around 29.74 million tons of waste annually. Unfortunately, there is a trash crisis in the Naples area that has been going on for the past 15 years. The crisis is now being dealt with, but it has not been an easy task.

9. Spain

Spain produces 26.34 million tons of waste every year, which is about 1/3 the weight of garbage produced by each American.

10. Turkey

Turkey produces 25.99 million tons of garbage. This is only about half as much as the amount of garbage produced by the Japanese.

Although China was not included in the top 10 as of 2006, the amount of garbage produced in China is rising, as noted in a recent article by Chi-Chi Zhang. China is estimated to produce an annual amount of over 220 million tons of municipal waste. According to waste management expert Nie Yongfeng, paper, plastic, and other garbage has reached around 300 million tons a year. Urbanization, population growth, and increasing affluence have all contributed to China's waste production. Cities in China are full of garbage, and city officials are having trouble managing this problem. Zhanglidong, a village in China, is now filled with garbage from the city of Zhengzhou. Resident Wang Xiuhua said, "Life here went from heaven to hell in an instant."

The population of the United States is only about a quarter the size of China's, yet the amount of garbage produced by the U.S. on an annual basis is close to the amount that China produces. Trash Planet: China warns that the amount of garbage produced in China is expected to rise greatly, however. According to the World Bank, China will produce approximately 533 million tons of waste by 2030, which is a staggering amount. Unfortunately, consumption of packaged foods increased by 10.8 percent each year between 2000 and 2008. The packaged-food market is expected to increase to $195 billion by 2013. Preventative actions must be taken. Otherwise, China's environmental problems are going to escalate dramatically.

Another way to answer this question is by examining the countries with the greatest municipal waste per capita.  The results are different than the total amount municipal waste generated by a country.

Here is the Municipal Waste per capita by country, beginning with the greatest emitter.

1) United States

2) Australia

3) Iceland

4) Norway

5) Switzerland

6) Luxembourg

7) France

8) Denmark

9) Ireland

10) Netherlands

I think you have to think of this question also by how many people are living in the country. For the US, each person produces an average of 4.4 lbs of trash a day! It's hard to think we throw away so much but the US isnt the biggest trash producer, Mexico produces 30% more than the US. In America, the trash we through away alone could cover Texas 1.5 times. This is why it is so important to recycle. Newspapers, aluminum containers, and certain plastics can be recycled to reuse in a different form, thus saving space in landfills. Another way to help with the waste problem is to reduce the amount of garbage you produce. This can be done by buying less, buying things in smaller packaging, and simply reusing what you have.

United States tops the list, as was stated before, but heres a few facts that were hard for me to stomach: The US population discards each year 16,000,000,000 diapers, 1,600,000,000 pens, 2,000,000,000 razor blades, 220,000,000 car tires, and enough aluminum to rebuild the US commercial air fleet four times over. Americans throw away 25,000,000,000 Styrofoam coffee cups every year, and each year about 1 billion trees worth of paper is thrown away.

This is just the tip of the iceberg so to speak, see the link below for more.

The country that produces the most garbage in the world is The United States. Unfortunately, The United States produces about 720 kilograms per year per capita of trash. Australia is the next runner up producing approximately 690 kilograms per year per capita of trash. What should be the answer to this overload of trash plaguing our world and damaging our environment? Recycle, reduce and reuse,  and keep the cycle flowing will help reduce the amount of trash production.

Here is a website that will help you understand the process of recycling more:

Please help the Earth from being a further victim of human waste. It's the ethical thing to do, recycle!

United States is the number 1 most produced grabage in the world. United States produces 2kg x 3 billion people which would equal 6 billion kg of trash per day! Australia follows second place with 1.9kg x (how many people they have in their country), Canada comes in third place with 1.8kg, Finland with 1.7 kg and Iceland with 1.5kg. So far United States has been in the first place for a while now.

Unfortunately the largest export in the United States is trash to other nations. We send most of our garbage to third world countries, who need the money to survive. They have no other choice.

yeah..that's absolutely right! Respondents even haven't read thru what the question was asking..NOT PER CAPITA WASTE PRODUCTS! That even includes exports..not just limited to domestic consumption i guess.. in that regard..U.S in no doubt must top the list.. and then ..where's China from their top lists!! Come on guys.. Over half of imports coming in to S.Korea are produced in China..many of which're really useless and head directly into the trash can.. on the other hand, there aren't that many made in U.S that're total waste.. actually my household still use some American made products purchased quite several yrs ago! but after being fooled by junks and counterfeit products..we now rarely buy made in CHina products.. Tourists come to visit flea markets here, and don't expect that many traditional..korean made items, and come to realize majority of what's found there has its tag 'made in China'.. do't think of it just as per capita waste..since the average Chinese don't dispose comparable amounts of trash..but the number of population that adds to sum in the total (amounts of) waste ..and many factories!

In terms of food waste, the average North American or European consumer will waste between 95-115 kilograms each year in contrast to 6-11 kilograms a year for individuals within South Asia and Sub-saharan Africa according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.  Stunningly and also not surprisingly rich nations, such as the United States, will waste 222 million tonnes on food which is nearly equal to the food produced in Sub-saharan Africa.  1,000,000,000 U.S. dollars are spent to dispose of such waste each year, indicative of a problem within the food production cycle.
