According to Green Philly Blog, a simple home-made remedy to clogged drains can be achieved by the following steps:

"Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain and follow it with a 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Let it sit for 20 mins – 1/2 hour and then pour about 2 quarts of boiling water down."

Not only is it safer and cheaper, it is eco-friendly as well.

Other than the baking soda/vinegar mixture, there are also tools designed for unclogging drains.
