Hydrogen can be used numerous ways to make energy. First it can be separated and used in combination with oxygen to produce electricity from numerous "traditional" energy sources such as methane, coal and gasoline and renewable sources such as biomass and water. The process that hydrogen can used to create energy from water is electrolysis, where the hydrogen and water  are separated. As stated in the URL below the technology is still developing to make this process energy sufficient.
