Barite is the common name used for Barium Sulfate (BaSO4).  I attached a link that gives you all sorts of physical characterisitics like hardness and crystal habits.  Its main use is in drilling systems where it helps to flush materials that are cut be the drill up to the surface.  It is also used in paint pigments and in paper and cloth.
