Most Nobel Peace Prizes are awarded for endeavors which prevent war and encourage unity between people. However, many prizes have been awarded for work for environmental causes. Al Gore won in 2006 for his work increasing awareness about climate change. In 2004 Wangari Maathai won for encouraging democracy, peace, and agricultural sustainability in Kenya.
