Newport Rhode Island Opens Luxury Eco-Hotel

January 28, 2011 – By Jen Noelken

Newport Rhode Island opened a waterfront, luxury eco-hotel, Forty 1◦ North Marina Resort.  Designed by award-winning DAS Architects, the hotel is considered one of the most fashionable green destinations.  The hotel is among the first in the nation to incorporate recycled and reclaimed finishes throughout.  Forty 1◦ North is LEED registered and is working to achieve Silver certification.

The luxury hotel’s name is the coordinate of the building’s location.  Built on Newport’s historic waterfront, Forty 1◦ North’s exterior pays homage to the area’s 18th century architecture.  White outer façade, gambrel roof forms, and striking porch structures complement rich elegance with a modern twist.  Oversized balconies and floor to ceiling windows offer natural sunlight, seaside breezes, and spectacular sunset views.

Interiorly the hotel focuses on luxury design with eco-chic flair.  Forty 1◦ North considers itself “casual glamour.”  Guestrooms and suites use large operable windows and sliding doors allowing guests to take advantage of Rhode Island’s known cool sea breezes.  Hotel public area is adorned with French doors for the same purpose.  The simple, yet stylish design helps significantly decrease air conditioning use during warmer months. FSC-certified wood was used throughout the building, while efficient spray-on foam was used to create a more energy-efficient insulation for the building.

Rooms are fitted with all the amenities a luxury hotel should offer, but with an eco-conscious mindfulness.  The rooms are structured with south and west facing windows to decrease the need for artificial light.  When lamps are needed, all use LED and CFL lightbulbs reducing energy consumption by up to fifty percent.  Forty 1◦ North is also the first hotel in the country to use hospitality grade LED televisions.  Keeping with technology, print newspapers, maps, etc. have gone digital.  The hotel offers a complementary iPad for use during the guest’s stay, which features daily newspapers, maps, menus, and directions.

Suite bathrooms make the guest feel like their in a spa.  Malin + Goetz, an all natural ingredient and environmentally conscious company, was selected for the toiletry items.  Fast drying Green Earth towels are provided in all the rooms.  Made from super-fine cotton, Green Earth towels take less time to machine dry reducing energy consumption.  The towels also take less time to air dry keeping them soft and comfortable for multiple reuses.  When the guest is ready to sleep, beds are fitted with down-free pillows and duvets reducing air born allergens.

Luxury amenities are not limited to rooms and design features.  Two waterfront restaurants, The Grill and Christie’s, are available.  From upscale dining to family dining, these two unique restaurants cover any event and any appetite.  The Grill can also be booked for private events accommodating up to 400 people in 16,500 square feet.  Outdoor space, manicured courtyard, custom catering, and on-site parking allows the host to design a picturesque event.  An on-site event planner and consultant help make the perfect sitting.  Throughout the year, Forty 1◦ North hosts a variety of special events including organic wine tasting, yoga classes, and holiday parties.

A waterfront hotel is not complete without yacht services.  Featuring top-of-the-line services, Forty 1◦ North is “on par with world-class yachting destinations around the globe.”  Seasonal and transient guests have over 15 services available, including laundry service, launch service, and concierge service.  Slips accommodate yachts up to 250 feet.

Guests have an option of spacious guestrooms, suites, cottages, or lofts.  All rooms are “outfitted with state-of-the-art technology and environmentally friendly amenities, adhering to [the] philosophy of responsible consumption and design.”
